A Woman#8217;s Work: Ann Plato#8217;s Republic. William King, #8220;Phyllis Wheatley?#8221; She was named for the ship that stole her away. At seven years old, Phillis Wheatley crossed the Atlantic from West Africa, another dot in the mosaic of roughly six million enslaved Africans who landed in the Americas between 1700 and 1808. Small and so young, she became Boston merchant John Wheatley’s gift to wife Susannah. Early on, Phillis’ talent shone. She mastered Latin and Greek, earning transatlantic praise for her Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral , the first book of poetry by an African-American, published in London in 1773. She sat for an author portrait, toured England, met George Washington, and, finally, secured her freedom before dying, impoverished, in essay skills year 9, 1784. Early Americans and early Americanists have pored over her too-brief career ever since. Start A College Essay. Phillis Wheatley’s byline alone, threading together her sacrifice and her sale, bears hard history in it. As an African-American founding mother of our national literary tradition, Wheatley owns a leading role in survey classes, public statues, and cultural memory.

Wheatley’s last manuscript, 300 pages of essay skills 9, poetry, may be lost; but we hold pieces of her legacy intact. Here at first homework helper, the Massachusetts Historical Society, I pass by her writing desk nearly every day. Essay Writing Skills Year 9. It’s not the one in her formal portrait. Rather, it’s the mahogany “card or tea table” that John Wheatley gifted Phillis with sometime during her long servitude. Ball-and-claw feet grip the carpet. Masters Degree With. A neat apron-front drawer has room enough for cards, ink, and a few cottony sheets of colonial paper. Sold at auction to settle her heavy debts, the poet’s desk is writing skills a rich artifact of literary technology, an Enlightenment-era laptop. Explain. Polished and bare, Phillis Wheatley’s desk raises the question: Who took up her pen? Today, resuming my series on early American women intellectuals, I’ll focus on Ann Plato, a Hartford, Conn., schoolteacher who was, in many ways, Wheatley’s direct heir. Or so argued the writing year 9 abolitionist preacher James W.C.

Pennington in his opening attestation of masters degree no thesis, Plato’s 1841 Essays; Including Biographies and Miscellaneous Pieces, in Prose and Poetry . Pennington, then deep at year, work on grade homework sheet his own book, The Origin and History of the skills Colored People (1841), made a compelling case for Plato’s historical significance. Of African-American and Native American ancestry, Plato ( fl . 1824-1870), had, according to Pennington, suffered in order to grade homework sheet persevere as a literary artist. Skills. By his lights, Ann Plato therefore joined the ranks of Wheatley, the Roman playwright Terence, and defining essay, the Jamaican poet Francis Williams. “These all served in essay skills, adversity,” Pennington reminded readers, “and afterwards found that nature had no objection , at defining essay, least to their serving the world in high repute as poets… But as Greece had a Plato why may we not have a Platoess?” For researchers, the skills year long-forgotten, local “Platoess” has proved near-mythic to examine. A great deal of excellent biographical spadework has been done by Ron Welburn, in Hartford’s Ann Plato and the Native Borders of Identity (Albany: SUNY Press, 2015). Ann Plato presents a critical dilemma for scholars, as Welburn points out, since she “left neither entry nor exit signs,” opting to grade helper sheet blur her contributions within the historical record. Tracing Plato’s education from writing year eastern Long Island to her Connecticut teaching career, Welburn weaves in the intellectual “places in between,” where Ann Plato also thrived: praying at the Talcott Street (Colored) Congregational Church, publishing poetry in The Colored American newspaper, and––like so many other Americans––possibly wending her way West, to Iowa, in the Reconstruction era. Mcdonaldization. To deal with Plato on any critical level is essay skills year 9 tough. Though she produced several shorter (and often near/anonymous) pieces, Ann Plato’s legacy rises or falls on her single volume, Essays . Between her conduct book’s rote lines lies a wealth of African-Americans’ sense of experience, education, history.

A pastiche of start a college buy, prose parables, morality tales, advice for youths, and poetry humming with political and religious commentary: Ann Plato’s book is at essay writing skills year 9, home in the early republic. With No Thesis. Plato’s Essays split along three paths, marked out “Prose,” “Biographies,” and “Poetry.” To read Plato is to sink fully into the antebellum schoolroom. The first section instructs the reader via “lessons from nature,” outlining the writing 9 Christian principles of education, diligence, and obedience needed to frame a good character. Youth remains the best “season” to cultivate ideal habits. Plato’s voice steers the narrative; she is quiet but firm.

In one essay, she frets that her female pupils will favor making a “showy appearance” more than “prizing the gift” of entrance into the “temple of knowledge.” In another piece, she urges students to renee excel, since “mediocrity is a proof of weakness; and perfection may always be purchased by application.” Like her literary peers, Ann Plato keeps her “Prose” primly aspirational with “Eminence from Obscurity,” a listicle of essay 9, “great” European men who have “risen from mcdonaldization thesis humble stations” and skills 9, laboring lives to become artists and scholars. Plato wraps up “Prose” with a trinity of tragic reflections. Renee. “Life is Short” documents the first moments of essay skills year 9, new orphans, in freefall after a family funeral. First. “Death of the essay writing skills 9 Christian,” a shorter and more ambitious work, namechecks a set of classical and modern references (Caesar, Pollok, Byron, Chesterfield, Addison). Defining. There, Plato reels in cultured readers with her impressive grasp of Anglo-American literature. Then she steps back, sealing her conclusion with an appeal to godly virtue. “Learn with what superior dignity of essay skills, mind a Christian can die,” Plato writes. Certainly, Pennington’s “authoress” knew her audience, for Plato folds lost friends into her saga. The second part, “Biographies,” features short eulogies of four women, all local acquaintances who died young (likely of consumption). Using their lives to first homework sheet reinforce cherished notions of Christian morality and youthful piety, Plato attempts women’s biography with sentimental verve. Industrious, mild, and essay 9, ever sweetened by death’s approach, Plato’s subjects melt and sway into one another’s path. Plato is more interested in presenting a template than a person, putting her work in line with the religious tracts, advice books, and “manners” novels that fellow New Englanders enjoyed. Then, in webber, the space of a few stanzas, Plato turns inward, and against the crowd.

Ann Plato is writing 9 best known for her poem, “The Natives of mcdonaldization, America,” an eloquent reflection on her biracial identity, which features prominently in her Essays ’ final pages. Go ahead, read it. Plato opens in a familiar, Longfellow-esque tone, with a child begging for essay year a story from her father’s lap. But the narrative she learns is start a college admission essay buy one of conquest and loss. Here is a key sample: “Wars ensued. They knew the writing skills year 9 handling of firearms. / Mothers spoke,––no fear this breast alarms, / They will not cruelly us oppress, / Or thus our lands possess. / Alas it was a cruel day; we were crush’d: / Into the dark woods we rush’d / To seek a refuge. First Homework. / My daughter, we are now diminish’d, unknown, / Unfelt!

Alas! no tender tone / To cheer us when the hunt is done; / Fathers sleep––we’re silent every one.” If Plato’s individual eulogies run drab, embroidered with obligatory accents of Christian piety, her reconstruction of the Native American experience is essay writing year raw, powerful, and worth your read. Part of why I began this project was to read more early American thinkers who sensed their histories, like Phillis Wheatley’s or Ann Plato’s, were diminished, unfelt, unknown. Reading Ann Plato’s republic is defining essay a way to understand the kind of historical figure extolled by skills Anna Julia Cooper in A Voice From the South (1892), the “open-eyed but hitherto voiceless Black Woman of America.” It’s also a route to retrace how early American women wrote about themselves en route to Seneca Falls, through the thesis Civil War, beyond the cultural upheavals of Reconstruction, and into a modern realm of world literature that Phillis Wheatley glimpsed, far too briefly. For, as “A Lady from Philadelphia,” asked in an 1885 issue of Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine : “Why should not the coming novelist be a woman as well as an African? She––the woman of that race––has some claims on Fate which are not yet paid up.” The Society for U.S. Intellectual History is writing year a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization. An Exam Reader#039;s Advice on year 9, Writing. Lakeland High School. During my experience as a Reader, I have learned a few things about writing that I would like to share with other teachers. I hope you’ll find my observations helpful as you think about encouraging your students to do their best on the writing section of the AP English Literature Exam. How Essay! Students should not begin writing until they fully comprehend the prompt and/or the passage. Mere parroting of the prompt often leads to floundering around instead of developing a clear direction. I recommend that you advise your students to write directly on skills 9, the passage and make quick notes and outlines in the margins.

This planning enables most writers to organize their ideas more efficiently. I have found that teaching students acronyms for reading and defining essay writing strategies (DIDLS, TP-CASTT, etc.) can work wonders. (These terms are discussed in essay 9, the AP Vertical Teams Guide for English , 2002.) While your very best students might not need them, less able students can find them useful ways to begin. I often suggest that my own students not only mark up the passage, but also use the margins to fill in webber thesis, some of the acronym steps. This active planning takes an essay writing skills year extra five minutes or so, but I’ve found that it’s well worth the time. Students who fail to read closely frequently wind up paraphrasing rather than analyzing the passages. Planning helps them stay focused. Although AP Readers are instructed to read the entire essay and not to be prejudiced by a weak introduction, a strong opening paragraph can be a real asset to a student’s paper. Masters! When answering the free-response part of the AP English Exams, writers should answer the question quickly and avoid beginning with ideas that do not relate directly to the prompt. The following hypothetical introduction for Question 1 on the 2002 AP English Literature Exam provides an example of what not to writing skills, do: “All people at some point in time have encountered a great deal of explain how essay, trouble in year, their lives.

I know of so many people who have been embarrassed by parents that will wave at you from across a room. I have a friend who told me that her parents did this very same thing.” Such generalities often signal a writer’s inability to respond in a thoughtful manner, suggesting that the rest of the defining love paper also may be incoherent or rambling. The Reader might begin to suspect that the student is just trying to bluff his or her way through the question. One-sentence perfunctory introductions—especially ones that repeat the wording of the prompt—also work poorly, suggesting to the Reader that the student isn’t particularly interested or doesn’t care. Skills Year 9! I recommend that teachers tell students to create an introduction strong enough to earn a grade of 3 all by itself. That means that students should learn ways to summary, answer the entire prompt—not simply repeat it—in the introduction. This indicates to the Reader that the essay year 9 paper could be heading into the upper-half zone. One way to help students improve their beginning is by explain providing them with several introductory paragraphs from papers that have earned a wide range of scores and asking them to identify stronger and essay writing weaker openings. (Sample papers are available on the Exam homepage for the course.) Rubrics especially designed for defining essay, introductory paragraphs also can be helpful. Essay Writing 9! After having students collect examples of several strong openings, you may want to explain how essay, ask them to develop their own rubric for introductory paragraphs. Essay Year! Use paragraphs and topic sentences. Although it may seem like a small matter, students should indent paragraphs clearly.

A paper without indentation or with unclear indentation often confuses a Reader. Paragraphs create the fundamental structure of the essay, and without them good ideas can get muddled. Most essays I’ve seen that do not use paragraphs tend to a college essay, be full of confused and skills year 9 rambling thoughts. Many writers find topic sentences a useful tool both for organizing paragraphs and also for helping Readers navigate through the essay. To score at least a 3, students would be wise to how essay, make use of skills year, pertinent references from the text. Summary! Encourage them to use specific quotations to essay 9, back up their assertions. However, remind them that they must explain their quotes clearly and demonstrate how they are relevant to the question. It is important for renee thesis, young writers to realize that offering long quotes without explanation bogs down the essay essay and can give the mcdonaldization thesis summary undesirable impression that the student is trying to fill up space rather than answer the prompt! Short, choppy sentences without variety indicate a student who has little background in grammar and style, perhaps someone who has read and written minimally.

Teach students how to essay year, connect ideas with transitional wording, participial phrases, appositives, subordinate clauses, etc. I ask my students to imagine children making the defining same tower or castle each time they played with blocks. Writing Skills 9! They soon would become bored. Likewise, both writers and readers get bored when everything is formulaic, lacking some individual pizzazz! I suggest asking them to experiment with different sorts of syntactical devices to help them develop a sense of style. An arsenal of appropriate vocabulary and analytical wording reveals a brilliant mind at work, but writers should make certain that the words fit.

Some students stick in big words just to sound scholarly. Ironically, some of their papers score only how essay a 2 because they lack clarity and sometimes say nothing of essay writing skills, relevance to the prompt. I advise my students to use the active voice as much as possible as one remedy for explain how essay, repetition and other superfluous wording. I also suggest encouraging them to develop a mental thesaurus, so they will have a large variety of words available as they compose.

The abortion statutes challenged in Roe , which prohibited abortion throughout pregnancy except to save the life of the mother, did not conform to the Court’s “trimester” framework. Accordingly, they were declared unconstitutional. Id . at 164.

In Roe , the Court also held that an unborn child is not a “person” as that word is used in § 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment and, therefore, is essay writing skills not protected by either the Due Process Clause or the Equal Protection Clause, id . at first grade homework helper 156-59, a holding from which no Justice on the Court – then or since – has dissented. In Roe’s companion case of Doe v. Essay Writing Skills 9! Bolton , 410 U.S. 179 (1973), decided the how to a college admission, same day as Roe , the Court struck down various procedural requirements imposed by a Georgia abortion statute based on § 230.3 of the Model Penal Code (that the abortion be performed in a licensed and accredited hospital, that the procedure be approved by the majority of a medical staff committee of the year, hospital, and mcdonaldization summary that two other physicians in addition to the attending physician certify that the abortion was necessary for one of the reasons specified in the statute). 3 410 U.S. at 9 192-200. The Court also rejected a vagueness challenge to what remained of the substance of the statute after major provisions of the statute had been declared unconstitutional by a federal district court. Id . at 191-92.

4 Both Justice Byron White and Justice William Rehnquist dissented from the opinions in Roe and Doe striking down the Texas and Georgia abortion statutes. The Origins of a Constitutional Right ^ top. Roe , as noted in the Introduction, was based on the right of privacy. As Roe itself acknowledged, however, “[t]he Constitution does not explicitly mention any right of privacy. 410 U.S. at 152. Nevertheless, in writing 9 a line of decisions going back to the late nineteenth century, “the Court has recognized that a right of personal privacy, or a guarantee of certain areas or zones of how to essay privacy, does exist under the Constitution.

Id . This right of writing skills year privacy, “founded in a college admission essay buy the Fourteenth Amendment’s concept of year personal liberty, the Court in Roe held, “is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy. Id . at 153. The roots of a right of personal privacy have been found in the U.S. Constitution in the following places: in the mcdonaldization, free speech guarantee of the First Amendment, which has been held to skills year, protect the mcdonaldization thesis summary, possession of pornography in one’s home, Stanley v. Georgia , 394 U.S. 557, 564 (1969); in the Fourth Amendment, which secures the right of the people against “unreasonable searches and seizures of their “persons, homes, papers and effects, and essay 9 the Fifth Amendment, which prohibits compulsory self-incrimination, see Boyd v. United States , 116 U.S. 616, 630 (1886) (Fourth and degree with Fifth Amendments protect against all governmental invasions “of the sanctity of a man’s home and essay writing skills 9 the privacies of life”); in first grade sheet the Ninth Amendment, which preserves other rights not enumerated in the Constitution, Griswold v. Connecticut , 381 U.S.

479, 486 (1965) (striking down statute prohibiting use of contraceptives by married couples) (Goldberg, J., concurring) ; in writing year the “penumbras (shades) of the thesis summary, Bill of Rights as a whole, Griswold , 381 U.S. at 484-85 ; and in the liberty language of the Due Process Clause of § 1 of the writing skills year 9, Fourteenth Amendment, Meyer v. Nebraska , 262 U.S. 390, 399 (1923) (striking down a state statute forbidding the teaching of any subject in any language other than English, or the teaching of thesis modern foreign languages below the eighth grade). The right of privacy, the Court in Roe noted, also has “some extension to activities relating to essay writing, marriage, . . . procreation, . . . Defining Essay Love! family relationships, . Essay Writing Skills 9! . . and essay child rearing and education. 410 U.S. at 152-53 , citing the following cases: Loving v. Virginia , 388 U.S. 1, 12 (1967), recognizing liberty interest in marrying the person of one’s choice; Skinner v. Essay Writing 9! Oklahoma , 316 U.S. 535, 541-42 (1942), striking down statute mandating sterilization of certain recidivists; Eisenstadt v. Baird , 405 U.S. Defining Love! 438 (1972), striking down statute prohibiting distribution of contraceptives to unmarried persons; Prince v. Massachusetts , 321 U.S. Essay Writing! 158, 166 (1944), recognizing authority of parents over their children, but upholding child labor laws as applied to the children of Jehovah’s Witnesses who were distributing religious literature in exchange for defining essay love, voluntary contributions; Pierce v. Essay Writing Skills Year! Society of Sisters ,268 U.S. 510, 535 (1925), striking down statute mandating public education of children between the ages of thesis eight and essay writing skills sixteen; and Meyer v. Nebraska (holding described above).

II. Critique of Roe’s Privacy Theory ^ top. The Supreme Court’s reliance on privacy theory to support a right to how to a college essay, abortion is problematical at essay writing 9 several levels. First, as the how essay, Court itself recognized, Roe , 410 U.S. at essay writing skills year 152, the Constitution itself “does not expressly mention any right of privacy.” To be sure, as Justice Hugo Black noted in his dissent in Griswold v. Connecticut , 381 U.S. 479, 508-10 (1965) (Black, J., dissenting), various provisions of the a college essay, Bill of essay writing year Rights protect specific privacy interests, for love, example, the First Amendment’s right of associational privacy, the writing year, Fourth Amendment’s protection against unreasonable searches and thesis seizures and the Fifth Amendment’s prohibition of compelled self-incrimination. But the writing, Constitution does not create a general right of privacy. Renee Webber Thesis! See , e.g ., Katz v. United States , 389 U.S. 347, 350 (1967) (Fourth Amendment, which “protects individual privacy against 9 certain kinds of essay governmental intrusions,” “cannot be translated into a general constitutional ‘right to privacy’”).

Recognition of a “general constitutional ‘right to privacy’” cannot be reconciled with the care with which the Framers of the Bill of Rights described the specific rights that were being secured. Second, the concept of “privacy” is amorphous and essay skills year chameleon (or, in Justice Black’s words, “broad, abstract and ambiguous,” Griswold , 381 U.S. at defining essay love 509 ). Roe’ s attempt to collect cases under the rubric of “privacy” – a term that does not even appear in essay writing 9 most of the cases cited – simply creates an artificial common denominator among a very disparate and largely unrelated group of cases that have nothing to do with the subject of abortion, as the Court in Roe freely admitted: “The situation [involving a pregnant woman and her unborn child] . . . is inherently different from marital intimacy, or bedroom possession of how essay obscene material, or marriage, or procreation, or education, with which Eisenstadt and Griswold , Stanley , Loving , Skinner , and Pierce and Meyer were respectively concerned.” 410 U.S. at 159 (emphasis added). 6 If a pregnant woman’s decision whether or not to carry her pregnancy to term is “inherently different” from all of the “privacy” cases on which the Court relied, then it is difficult to understand how those cases could possibly support recognition of a right to obtain an year 9 abortion. Third, most of the cases Roe cited in support of mcdonaldization its privacy theory were decided under one or another of the provisions in the Bill of writing skills 9 Rights. Roe itself, however, derived the right of privacy (and a subsidiary right to abortion) from the liberty language in the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, 410 U.S. at 153, not from any of the specific guarantees set forth in the Bill of thesis Rights. That directly contradicted the Court’s express refusal, only a few years earlier in Griswold , 381 U.S. at 481-82, to rely upon the Due Process Clause in postulating a right of privacy. Fourth, even with respect to skills year 9, the Due Process Clause, the Court no longer examines substantive due process claims (of which, more below) through the lens of privacy, and renee webber thesis that includes the subject of abortion. Essay Writing Skills Year! In reaffirming the “core holding” of essay love Roe – that the State may not prohibit abortion before viability for any reason or after viability if the essay year 9, pregnant woman’s life or health would be endangered by continuing the first grade homework, pregnancy – the Court, in Planned Parenthood v. Casey , 505 U.S. 833, 846-53 (1992), relied upon writing the liberty language of the Due Process Clause of the explain, Fourteenth Amendment, not upon privacy theory. Essay Writing! 7 See also Cruzan v. Director , Missouri Dep’t of Health , 497 U.S. 261, 279 n. 7 (1990) (analyzing right to mcdonaldization summary, refuse unwanted medical treatment “in terms of a Fourteenth Amendment liberty interest, rather than under a “generalized constitutional right of privacy”).

Focusing more particularly on the Fourteenth Amendment, § 1 thereof provides, in year relevant part, that no State shall “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law . . . .” As its language suggests, the homework helper sheet, Due Process Clause is concerned with the process by which a person may be deprived of life, liberty or property, not the substance of the law authorizing such deprivation. See Lawrence v. Writing! Texas , 539 U.S. 558, 592 (2003) (Scalia, J., dissenting) . It was never the intent of the Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment that the how to start a college admission essay buy, Due Process Clause would serve as a battering ram to knock down statutes the substance of which offended the sensibilities of a majority of Justices who happen to sit on the Supreme Court from 9, time to explain how essay, time. See Raoul Berger, Government by Judiciary The Transformation of the Fourteenth Amendment (Liberty Fund 2d ed. 1997) 221-39, 273-306. 8 Despite its focus on process, the Due Process Clause, at various times in our history, has been given substantive content, resulting in essay writing year 9 the invalidation of state laws thought to be inconsistent with prevailing understandings of “liberty.” The paradigmatic case in this area, before Roe v, Wade was decided in 1973, is thesis summary Lochner v. New York , 198 U.S. Writing 9! 45 (1905). In Lochner , the Supreme Court, over the vigorous dissent of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., held that state legislation setting limits on the number of hours a person could work in how to a college admission essay a bakery daily (ten hours) and weekly (sixty hours) violated the liberty of an employer to contract with his employees on terms that were mutually agreeable to them.

The notion that the Due Process Clause has substantive (as opposed to only procedural ) content bedeviled constitutional adjudication for a generation, until it was laid to rest, at least with respect to the review of social and economic legislation, in West Coast Hotel v. Parrish , 300 U.S. 379 (1937), which upheld a minimum wage law. Essay Skills! Twenty-five years later, the Supreme Court could state that it had “returned to how essay, the original constitutional proposition that courts do not substitute their social and economic beliefs for the judgment of legislative bodies.” Ferguson v. Skrupa , 372 U.S. 726, 730 (1963). Despite the interment of what may be called “economic” substantive due process, “libertarian” substantive due process is alive and well. Under this strand of essay year substantive due process analysis, the mcdonaldization thesis, Due Process Clause “provides heightened protection against government interference with certain fundamental rights and liberty interests.” Washington v. Glucksberg , 521 U.S. 702, 720 (1997). Roe v. Wade , while sounding in essay writing skills year privacy theory, was ultimately based on the liberty language of § 1 of the explain how essay, Due Process Clause of the essay 9, Fourteenth Amendment, see Roe , 410 U.S. at 153, and, therefore, may justly be regarded as the modern paradigm of (libertarian) substantive due process analysis.

See Richard Epstein, Substantive Due Process by Any Other Name , 1973 Sup. Ct. Rev. 159, 184. But Roe flunks the test the Court uses for evaluating substantive due process claims.

In determining whether an asserted liberty interest (or right) should be regarded as fundamental for first grade homework helper sheet, purposes of substantive due process analysis (infringement of essay writing year which would call for start essay buy, strict scrutiny review), the Supreme Court applies a two-prong test. First, there must be a “careful description” of the asserted fundamental liberty interest. Glucksberg , 521 U.S. at 721 (citation and internal quotation marks omitted). Second, the interest, so described, must be firmly rooted in “the Nation’s history, legal traditions, and practices.” Id. at 710. An asserted interest in (or right to) abortion does not meet the second prong of the Glucksberg test. Essay Skills Year 9! Quite the contrary. As much research has established, especially that of Professor Dellapenna ( see n. 4, supra ) , abortion was a crime in masters degree with English and American common law, at least after “quickening” (that stage of pregnancy when the 9, woman first detects fetal movement, usually sixteen to eighteen weeks’ gestation), and renee very possibly without such a limitation. Essay Year! With the gradual replacement of common law crimes by statutory crimes in the nineteenth century, the overwhelming majority of States had made the performance of an abortion at any stage of pregnancy a crime well before the Fourteenth Amendment was adopted in 1868. And the case law interpreting these statutes revealed that the principal, if not exclusive, purpose in enacting these statutes was to protect unborn human life, not (or not solely) to safeguard women from degree no thesis, dangerous medical and/or surgical procedures.

See Paul Benjamin Linton, Planned Parenthood v. Casey : The Flight from Reason in the Supreme Court , XIII St. Louis U. Pub. L. Rev. 15, 109-15 (1993). Essay Year! In light of the foregoing, an interest in (or right to) abortion cannot be said to be firmly rooted in our “history, legal traditions, and practices.” III. Applications of Roe ^ top. The Supreme Court has decided almost three dozen abortion cases since and essay including Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton . A detailed analysis of the holdings in these cases would unduly prolong the writing skills, length of this essay. The principal holdings, however, may be briefly summarized:

In addition to the Texas abortion statutes struck down in Roe , the Court has struck down state statutes prohibiting particular abortion methods, Planned Parenthood of Central Missouri v. Danforth , 428 U.S. Explain How Essay! 52, 75-79 (1976) (saline amniocentesis), Stenberg v. 9! Carhart , 530 U.S. Grade Homework Helper Sheet! 914 (2000) (partial-birth abortion), but more recently has upheld the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, Gonzales v. Carhart , 550 U.S. 124 (2007). The Court has upheld statutes prohibiting non-physicians from performing abortions, Mazurek v. Armstrong , 520 U.S.

968 (1997) ( per curiam ) and has held that non-physicians may be prosecuted for performing abortions, Connecticut v. Menillo , 423 U.S. 9, 11 (1975) ( per curiam ) . Essay Writing Year! The Court has struck down statutes and ordinances requiring all abortions (or all abortions after the first trimester) to be performed in defining hospitals, Doe v. Bolton , 410 U.S. 179, 193-95 (1973) (all abortions), City of Akron v. Akron Center for Reproductive Rights ( Akron Center I ) , 462 U.S. 416, 431-39 (1983) (all abortions after the first trimester), Planned Parenthood Ass’n of Kansas City , Missouri , Inc. v. Ashcroft , 462 U.S. 476, 481-82 (1983) (all abortions after the first twelve weeks of pregnancy), but has upheld a statute requiring all second trimester abortions to be performed in either a hospital or a licensed outpatient clinic, Simopoulos v. Writing Year! Virginia , 462 U.S. 506, 510-19 (1983). The Court has struck down parental consent and thesis summary notice statutes and ordinances if they did not contain a judicial bypass mechanism that would afford the pregnant minor the opportunity to avoid obtaining the consent of (or giving notice to) her parents or legal guardian, 9 Danforth , 428 U.S. at 72-75 (one-parent consent), Akron Center I , 462 U.S. at 439-42 (one-parent consent without judicial bypass), Bellotti v. Baird , 443 U.S.

622 (1979) (two-parent consent) (inadequate judicial bypass), Hodgson v. Minnesota , 497 U.S. 417, 450-55 (1990) (two-parent notice without judicial bypass), 10 but has upheld statutes that contained an adequate judicial bypass, Ashcroft , 462 U.S. at year 490-93 (one-parent consent). Hodgson , 497 U.S. at 497-501 (Kennedy, J., concurring in the judgment in part and dissenting in thesis part), id. at 461 (O’Connor, J., concurring in part and concurring in the judgment in part) (two-parent notice with judicial bypass), Ohio v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health ( Akron Center II ) , 497 U.S. 502 (1990) (one-parent notice with judicial bypass), Planned Parenthood v. Casey , 505 U.S. 833, 899-900 (1992) (one-parent consent), Lambert v. Wicklund ,520 U.S. 292 (1997) (one-parent notice) ( per curiam ) . The Court has struck down statutes requiring a married woman to obtain the consent of, or give notice to, her husband before undergoing an abortion, Danforth , 428 U.S. at 67-72 (consent), and Casey , 505 U.S. at 887-98 (notice) . Writing Skills Year! The Court has upheld state and federal statutes restricting public funding of abortions, Beal v. Doe , 432 U.S. 438 (1977), Maher v. Roe , 432 U.S. Masters Degree With No Thesis! 464 (1977), Harris v. McRae , 448 U.S. 297 (1980), and Williams v. Zbaraz , 448 U.S. 358 (1980), as well as state statutes and municipal government policies prohibiting the performance of writing skills year 9 abortions by public employees within the scope of their employment or in publicly owned and a college admission essay buy operated facilities (other than those necessary to save the writing skills year 9, life of the mother), Poelker v. Doe , 432 U.S.

519 (1977), and Webster v. Reproductive Health Services , 492 U.S. 490, 507-11 (1989). The Court has also upheld federal administrative regulations (since rescinded) requiring physical and financial separation of renee webber Title X family planning projects from essay year, other projects operated by Title X grantees that perform, counsel or refer for masters with no thesis, abortion, Rust v. Sullivan , 500 U.S. 173 (1991). The Court has upheld a requirement that a pathology report be prepared for all fetal tissue obtained in the course of an abortion, Ashcroft , 462 U.S. at 486-90 , but has struck down a requirement that fetal remains be disposed of in a “humane and sanitary manner,” Akron Center I , 462 U.S. at 451-52 . The Court has upheld some record keeping and reporting requirements, Danforth , 428 U.S. at 79-81 , Casey , 505 U.S. at 900-01 , while striking down others, Thornburgh v. American College of essay writing skills 9 Obstetricians Gynecologists , 476 U.S. 747, 765-68 (1986), because of what the Court perceived as inadequate guarantees of patient confidentiality. Explain! The Court has upheld a requirement that a second physician be present during the performance of a post-viability abortion to provide immediate medical care for a viable child who survives an abortion procedure, Ashcroft , 462 U.S. at 482-86 , but has struck down a second-physician requirement that did not contain an writing express or implied exception for medical emergencies, Thornburgh , 476 U.S. at 769-71 . The Court has also struck down standards of care for the performance of post-viability abortions that were either vague, Colautti v. Franklin , 439 U.S. 379, 397-401 (1979), or posed an unacceptable risk to the mother’s health, Thornburgh , 476 U.S. at how to start a college admission buy 768-69 , but has upheld a statute mandating fetal viability testing at twenty weeks’ gestation, Webster , 492 U.S. at 513-21 . In a pair of decisions, later overruled in part by Planned Parenthood v. Writing 9! Casey , 505 U.S. 833 (1992), which is discussed in essay love the next part of this essay, infra , the Court held that States and municipalities could not require a short waiting period before the performance of a non-emergency abortion; that they could not required detailed informed consent information to essay skills year, be given to the pregnant woman seeking an abortion; and that they could not require portions of the informed consent information to be conveyed in person to how essay, the patient by the attending physician, see Akron Center I , 462 U.S. at 442-51 and Thornburgh , 476 U.S. at 759-65 . 11.

IV. Writing Skills! Roe Revisited: Planned Parenthood v. Casey ^ top. In 1992, the Supreme Court revisited Roe and, in a Joint Opinion authored by Justices Sandra Day O’Connor, Anthony Kennedy and David Souter, substantially modified its holdings. Planned Parenthood v. Casey , 505 U.S. 833 (1992). In Casey , the Court reaffirmed what it characterized as the “essential” (or “central”) holding of Roe , consisting of three parts: First, a woman has “the right . . . . to choose to webber thesis, have an abortion before viability and to writing skills year 9, obtain it without undue interference from the State. Before viability, the first grade homework helper, State’s interests are not strong enough to year 9, support a prohibition of abortion or the essay love, imposition of a substantial obstacle to the woman’s effective right to elect the procedure.” 505 U.S. at 846. Essay Year! Second, the State has the mcdonaldization thesis, power “to restrict abortions after fetal viability, if the law contains exceptions for pregnancies which endanger the writing skills 9, woman’s life or health.” Id . And, third, “the State has legitimate interests from the outset of the pregnancy in protecting the health of the woman and the life of the fetus that may become a child.” Id . While reaffirming the “essential” (or “central”) holding of a college essay buy Roe , the authors of the Joint Opinion rejected Roe’s “trimester” framework as an writing 9 unnecessarily “rigid construct” which “in its formulation . . . misconceives the nature of the pregnant woman’s interest,” and “in practice . . . undervalues the State’s interest in potential life . . . First Grade Homework Helper! .” Id . at 872-73. The trimester framework “misconceives the nature of the pregnant woman’s interest” because “[w]hat is at stake is [her] right to make the ultimate decision [to obtain an essay year abortion prior to how essay, viability], not a right to be insulated from all others in doing so.” Id . at 877. Essay Writing 9! “Though the woman has a right to with no thesis, choose to terminate or continue her pregnancy before viability,” the Joint Opinion explained, “it does not at all follow that the State is prohibited from essay writing skills 9, taking steps to ensure that [her] choice is thoughtful and informed.” Id . at 872.

The trimester framework “undervalues the State’s interest in potential life,” the Joint Opinion continued, because the State has a “substantial state interest in potential life throughout pregnancy,” id . at 876, not just after viability. In light of their dissatisfaction with the trimester framework of a college buy Roe and how it had been applied in skills year subsequent cases, the authors of the Joint Opinion developed a new standard for reviewing pre-viability abortion regulations, the so-called “undue burden” test. Casey , 505 U.S. at 874-79. Under that test, “a state regulation [that] has the purpose or effect of placing a substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a nonviable fetus” is unconstitutional. Id . at 877. Applying that test to the statutes challenged in Casey (multiple provisions of the Pennsylvania Abortion Control Act of how to start a college essay 1982, as amended), a majority of the Court upheld the detailed informed consent requirement (including the mandated twenty-four hour waiting period), the parental consent requirement and year the record keeping and reporting requirements, id . at 881-87, 899-901, but a differently constituted majority struck down the spousal notice requirement , id . at 887-98 . 12 In upholding the informed consent requirement (and the how to start admission buy, accompanying waiting period), the Court overruled, in part, its earlier conflicting precedents in essay writing skills 9 Akron Center I and how essay Thornburgh . Id . at 881-82. 13. Both Justice Harry Blackmun and Justice Paul Stevens dissented from the Joint Opinion’s abandonment of Roe’s trimester framework and the strict scrutiny standard of review, while Chief Justice William Rehnquist, joined by essay writing year 9, Justices Byron White, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, dissented from the reaffirmation of the “essential” holding of Roe , arguing that the rational basis standard should be applied to all regulation of with no thesis abortion.

14. The Joint Opinion in essay writing year Casey is renee notable in five respects: First, in reaffirming what it characterized as the “essential” (or “central”) holding of essay writing year Roe , the authors of the Joint Opinion raised the essay love, issue but refused to state whether they believed that Roe had been correctly decided as an essay writing original matter of constitutional interpretation, Casey , 505 U.S. at 871 (“[w]e do not need to mcdonaldization thesis, say whether each of us, had we been Members of the Court when the year, valuation of the state interest [in the protection of “potential life”] came before it as an how to essay buy original matter, would have concluded, as the Roe Court did, that its weight is insufficient to year 9, justify a ban on abortions prior to viability even when it is subject to certain exceptions”), 15 relying instead on “principles of institutional integrity” and “the rule of start essay stare decisis [deferring to precedent].” Id . at 845-46; see also id. at 854-69. Second, the writing skills year 9, Joint Opinion provided no principled basis for distinguishing between the “essential” (or “central”) and the inessential (or peripheral) holdings of Roe , reaffirming the former and overruling the latter. As Justice Scalia commented, “I must . . . confess that I have always thought, and I think a lot of other people have always thought, that the mcdonaldization thesis summary, arbitrary trimester framework, which the Court today discards, was quite as central to Roe as the arbitrary viability test, which the Court today retains.” Id . at essay writing year 993. (Scalia, J., concurring in the judgment in part and dissenting in part). Third, in reaffirming the “essential” holding of Roe , the Joint Opinion abandoned Roe’s reliance on privacy theory, resting its analysis, instead, on the liberty language of § 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment. Fourth, the Joint Opinion tacitly abandoned Roe’s characterization of the right to abortion as “fundamental.” 16 And, fifth, the Joint Opinion substituted a new standard of first grade helper review – “undue burden” – in place of the essay skills 9, strict scrutiny standard employed in Roe for masters with no thesis, evaluating fundamental rights, which clearly allows for a broader scope of regulation (but not prohibition) of pre-viability abortions.

17. The strict scrutiny standard of skills year 9 judicial review applies to laws that either interfere with the exercise of a fundamental constitutional right ( e.g ., voting) or discriminate on the basis of a suspect classification ( e.g ., race). A law reviewed under this standard is presumed to be un constitutional and thesis will not be upheld unless its proponents are able to demonstrate that it is writing skills year necessary to promote a compelling state (or governmental) interest. Few, if any, laws reviewed under this standard survive. First Homework Helper! At the opposite end of the spectrum is the rational basis standard of review, which applies to almost all other legislation. 18 Under this standard, a law is presumed to be constitutional and will be upheld so long as it has a rational relationship to any legitimate state (or governmental) purpose.

Most laws reviewed under this standard survive constitutional scrutiny. V. The Roberts Court and the Future of Abortion Jurisprudence ^ top. Under the leadership of Chief Justice John Roberts, the Supreme Court has taken a more cautious approach to the review of abortion regulation. Most obviously, the Court, in an opinion by essay skills 9, Justice Kennedy, upheld the masters degree no thesis, federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act in Gonzales v. Carhart , 550 U.S. Essay Writing Skills Year 9! 124 (2007) ( Carhart II ), after a differently constituted Court struck down a similar (but more vaguely worded) state statute only seven years earlier in Stenberg v. Carhart , 530 U.S. 914 (2000) ( Carhart I ). Less obviously, the Court has suggested that, at least with respect to the regulation of abortion, “facial challenges,” i.e ., a claim that a given statute is unconstitutional in its entirety, are disfavored, Carhart II , 550 U.S. 124 at 130 (“these facial attacks should not have been entertained in the first place”), and “as-applied” challenges, i.e ., a claim that a statute is unconstitutional in particular circumstances, are preferred, id . at 168 (“[a]s-applied challenges are the basic building blocks of constitutional adjudication”) (citation and internal quotation marks omitted).

Relatedly, in another decision of the Roberts Court, the Court unanimously held, in an opinion by Justice O’Connor, that when only a limited number of applications of an abortion statute would be unconstitutional, the degree, proper remedy (if otherwise consistent with legislative intent) is to enjoin enforcement of those applications only, not to declare the entire statute unconstitutional. Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England , 546 U.S. 320, 328-31 (2006) (reviewing parental notice law). Significantly, in Ayotte , Justice O’Connor acknowledged that the Court did not take this more circumspect approach in Carhart I, id . at 330-31 (explaining that “the parties . . . did not ask for, and skills year we did not contemplate, relief more finely drawn” than complete invalidation). Mcdonaldization Thesis! 19. In light of the Roberts Court’s more cautious approach to the review of abortion legislation, fewer challenges to abortion statutes may be expected.

Moreover, even with respect to those challenges that are brought and are determined to have merit, both the Supreme Court and the lower federal courts are likely to strike down the statute and enjoin its enforcement only with respect to its invalid applications, not in its entirety. VI. A Comment on the Scope of the Health Exception ^ top. Finally, a brief comment on an unresolved area of abortion law – the scope of the health exception required by Roe (as reaffirmed in Casey ). In Roe , the Supreme Court held that the States may prohibit abortion after viability “except when it is necessary to preserve the life or health of the mother.” 410 U.S. at 164. The Court, however, did not define the essay 9, term “health.” In the companion case of Doe v. Bolton , the Court considered a challenge to what remained of the Georgia abortion statute after major provisions of the statute had been declared unconstitutional by a federal district court. As a result of the district court’s decision, a physician could perform an abortion whenever he determined, in “his best clinical judgment,” that the abortion was “necessary.” At issue in Doe was whether this standard was impermissibly vague. The Court concluded that it was not: [T]he medical judgment [as to whether an abortion is “necessary”] may be exercised in helper sheet the light of 9 all factors – physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age – relevant to the well-being of the patient.

All these factors may relate to health. Whether Doe , properly understood, mandates an open-ended “health” exception for post-viability abortions is debatable. Although there is the merest hint in defining one older case that the skills year 9, Court (as then constituted) may have regarded the broad language in Doe as a limitation on the State’s authority to prohibit post-viability abortions, see Colautti v. Franklin , 439 U.S. 379, 400 (1979), the Court has never directly considered the grade homework sheet, validity of a post-viability ban. Skills Year! Lower federal courts have read Doe as a gloss on the scope of the health exception that must be included in any post-viability ban, 20 but that reading misinterprets Doe , as Justice Thomas noted in his dissent from the denial of certiorari in Voinovich v. Women’s Medical Professional Corp . , 523 U.S.

1036 (1998): Our conclusion that the statutory phrase at issue in Doe [whether the abortions was “necessary”] was not vague because it included emotional and how to start a college essay buy psychological considerations in no way supports the proposition that, after viability, a mental health exception is required as a matter of federal constitutional law . Writing! Doe simply did not address that question. 523 U.S. at 1039 (emphasis in how to essay buy original). As things now stand, whether the open-ended “health” language of Doe is a limitation on the authority of the States to prohibit post-viability abortions remains an open question, but one that should be answered by writing year 9, a challenge to an appropriately drafted statute. Given the present composition of the Court, there is reason to believe that such a statute would be upheld. In recognizing a constitutional right to abortion, the Court in Roe believed that it was meeting the mcdonaldization summary, “profound problems of the present day.” 410 U.S. at 165. The “problems” which the essay writing skills 9, Court thought would be ameliorated by its decision included the with no thesis, medical risks associated with pregnancy, a “distressful life and essay writing 9 future” for thesis, the pregnant woman confronted with an unwanted pregnancy, “[p]sychological harm,” the essay writing skills 9, difficulty in providing “child care,” “the distress, for all concerned, associated with the unwanted child,” “the problem of bringing a child into a family already unable, psychologically or otherwise, to care for it,” and, for some, “the additional difficulties and continuing stigma associated with unwed motherhood . . . .” Id . at 153. More than thirty years of experience with legalized abortion has failed to solve these problems, as well as others for which abortion was touted as a panacea (crime and poverty). Indeed, the regime of legal abortion has aggravated them. See Clarke D. Forsythe and Stephen B. Degree With No Thesis! Presser, The Tragic Failure of Roe v. Wade: Why Abortion Should be Returned to the States . Essay! 10 Tex.

Rev. of Law Politics 85, 108-36 (Fall 2005). In reaffirming, as modified, Roe in Casey , the Supreme Court “call[ed] the contending sides of a national controversy to end their national division by accepting a common mandate rooted in the Constitution.” 505 U.S. at 867. First Homework Helper! Given the issues at stake in abortion, that call, not surprisingly, has not been heeded. The abortion liberty has no “roots” in the Nation’s history, traditions and skills legal practices. And the “national division” over the abortion controversy, which Roe created and Casey continued, will not end until, initially, the Supreme Court returns the issue of abortion to the States and, eventually, the Constitution is amended to protect the lives of all unborn children. A discussion of the various standards of judicial review may be found in Part IV of this essay, infra . back. When Roe was decided, an unborn child was “viable,” i.e ., capable of explain living outside of his or her mother, at twenty-eight weeks of gestation. In light of medical advances made since Roe , viability may occur at twenty-three to twenty-four weeks, or, in some instances, even earlier, as the skills 9, Supreme Court recognized almost twenty years ago in Planned Parenthood v. Casey , 505 U.S. How To! 833, 860 (1992) (noting that viability may occur at skills year 9 twenty-three to twenty-four weeks). back.

Section 230.3 of the Model Penal Code, one version or another of which was adopted by thirteen States before Roe v. Wade , allowed abortion whenever the physician believed that there was a “substantial risk” that continuance of the pregnancy “would gravely impair the physical or mental health of the mother,” that “the child would be born with grave physical or mental defect,” or that “the pregnancy resulted from rape, incest, or other felonious intercourse.”In Doe , the defining love, Court also struck down a requirement that an abortion could be performed only upon a bona fide resident of the writing year, State of start admission essay buy Georgia. Let’s think for a moment about the kind of person you’re writing for when you’re writing an essay and what you need to do to write specifically for them: Teachers or university lecturers – they’re going to be marking your essay, so it needs to answer the defining essay question effectively.

They’ve set the question and they probably have a pretty good idea of how you’re going to answer it – so be original and unpredictable; catch them by writing skills 9 surprise with an unusual approach or structure. They’re going to be reading many other responses to the same question – so they may well be bored by mcdonaldization thesis summary the time they get to yours. Keep them interested! They’re probably going to be pressed for time – so they won’t have time to reread badly written passages to try to understand what you’re getting at. Essay Writing 9. Keep your writing easy to read, succinct and to the point. What all these points boil down to is the importance of keeping your reader interested in what you have to say. Since creative writing is all about holding the mcdonaldization reader’s interest, there must be some lessons to be learned from it and techniques that can be applied within the more limited style constraints of the academic essay. We’ll now turn to essay writing what these are. Yves Lavandier argues that, although traditionally divided into five acts, Hamlet consists of three dramatic acts.

The three-act structure is a writing device used extensively in modern writing, including for film and television dramas. These ‘acts’ aren’t as distinct as acts in grade homework sheet, a play, as one follows seamlessly on from another and year the audience wouldn’t consciously realise that one act had ended and another began. The structure refers to a plotline that looks something like this: Set-up – establishes the characters, how they relate to essay buy each other, and essay year 9 the world they inhabit. Within this first ‘act’, a dramatic occurrence called an ‘inciting incident’ takes place (typically around 19 minutes into a film) involving the principal character. They try to deal with it, but this results in another dramatic occurrence called a ‘turning point’. Essay Buy. This sets the scene for the rest of the story. Confrontation – the writing turning point in how essay, the previous ‘act’ becomes the central problem, which the skills main character attempts to renee webber thesis resolve – usually with plenty of adversity thrown their way that hampers their efforts.

In a murder mystery, for example, this act would involve the essay detective trying to solve the murder. The central character – with the help of supporting characters – undergoes a journey and develops their knowledge, skills or character to a sufficient degree to thesis be able to essay writing skills 9 overcome the problem. Explain. Resolution – the climax of the story, in which the drama reaches a peak, the problem is year 9, overcome, and loose ends are tied up. This structure sounds all very well for made-up stories, but what has it got to do with essay-writing? The key similarities here are: The central argument of your essay is the equivalent of the main character. The essay equivalent of the set-up and resolution are the introduction and conclusion.

The inciting incident in an essay encourages you to get to the point early on in the essay. The equivalent of admission essay, character development in the second act is developing your argument. The equivalent of the supporting characters is the evidence you refer to in your essay. The tornado is the inciting incident in the Wizard of Oz – so to take the analogy a little further, the longer you leave your essay before you get to the point, the longer you leave your reader standing around in dull black-and-white Kansas, waiting for something to happen. So, applying the writing skills 9 three-act structure to an essay gives you something like this: Set-up – the a college admission buy introduction. This establishes what you’re talking about, setting the essay writing skills scene.

The ‘inciting incident’ could be the introduction of evidence that contradicts a common theory, or the highlighting of webber thesis, a central disagreement in how something is year, interpreted. Confrontation – you discuss the different problems surrounding the how essay topic you’re writing about. You develop the argument using various bits of evidence, moving towards an overall conclusion. Resolution – the conclusion. You summarise and resolve the argument with your own opinion, by essay skills year 9 coming down on one side or the other, having weighed up the helper evidence you’ve discussed.

You could perhaps tie up loose ends by offering an alternative explanation for evidence that doesn’t sit with your conclusion. Using this structure keeps you focused on the central point, and stops you from waffling, because everything you write is essay skills year 9, working towards resolving your argument. The use of the inciting incident in explain, the first ‘act’ encourages you to get to essay writing the point early on in your essay, thereby keeping the reader interested. The principles of good plot-writing are centred around the connection between different events that show cause and effect, and this central tenet of the three-act structure has obvious parallels with the way in which essays work through presenting evidence in support of arguments. A murder mystery novel might start with the murder and then establish the explain how essay build-up in flashbacks. An oft-spouted piece of advice in creative writing is to use an attention-grabbing opening. Essay Skills. One way of doing this is to start with a ‘flashback’, which could disrupt the chronology of with no thesis, events by transporting the reader directly back to the midst of the action, so that the story begins with maximum excitement. Essay Skills Year 9. In a murder mystery, for instance, the writer might skip a slow build-up and instead use the murder itself to form the opening of the novel, with the explain rest of the essay writing story charting the efforts of the essay love detective to uncover the perpetrator and perhaps telling the events prior to writing skills year 9 the murder in love, a series of flashbacks. Writing Skills 9. The same principle can be applied to renee webber essays, though it’s easier to use in writing skills year 9, some subjects than others. To take an start a college admission essay buy example, let’s say you were writing about how the First World War started. Rather than building up slowly with the various factors, an attention-grabbing opening could (briefly) describe the drama of the Battle of the Somme, perhaps citing some statistics about the number of men involved and killed, and quoting some war poetry about the horrors faced by the soldiers on the Front Line.

Then, to introduce the essay year 9 purpose of the mcdonaldization summary essay and launch into your argument about what started the essay writing 9 war, a phrase such as, “It seems hard to imagine that all this began with…”. Alternatively, a rhetorical question: “But how did these tens of thousands of soldiers end up in the mud and horror of trench warfare? The story begins several years earlier, with…” It may not be the standard way of writing an essay, but you’ll certainly score points for originality and perhaps ruffle a few feathers. Metaphor is used extensively in Romeo and Juliet. Film still from Romeo and Juliet (F. Zefferelli, 1968). Creative writing often makes use of extended metaphors. With No Thesis. For example, when Shakespeare wrote the 9 passage in Romeo and Juliet referring to mcdonaldization summary “It is the East, and Juliet is the essay writing skills sun!” he was using an grade sheet extended metaphor. Essay Year. With this in mind, it’s time to revisit a point we made in a previous article about writing more original essays, in which we argued that, rather than battling on with trying to mcdonaldization thesis explain a complex concept in a straightforward way, it might be easier to use an analogy to convey the meaning by drawing comparisons, which people find easier to understand. A metaphor is a kind of analogy, so the essay skills 9 similarities with creative writing are strong here. In our previous article we used the webber thesis example of radioactive decay.

An analogy for this is the pressure with which water escapes from a hole in essay year 9, a bucket. It does so exponentially, just as radioactive substances decay exponentially. In both instances, the rate of a consumptive process depends on how much there is left of whatever is being depleted, which results in an exponential rate of decay. This concept is so much easier to explain using the analogy of water flowing from a hole in a bucket, as you give your reader something familiar to visualise in order to explain a concept with which they are unfamiliar. 5. Interesting details about thesis summary setting and skills year location. Augustus lived frugally. Another way of keeping your reader interested is to bring your essay to life with details about setting and location, just as creative writers do. Essays can become quite dry if you focus solely on the academic problems, but you can make them more interesting by peppering them with details. This may not work quite so well for essay a scientific essay, but it’s certainly relevant for some humanities subjects, in particular English literature, history and archaeology. For example, an essay about the essay skills year 9 Roman emperor Augustus could mention that he lived a famously modest lifestyle, quoting details from Roman writers and archaeological evidence that support this: Suetonius mentions his “low bed” (interesting because of what it says about accepted standards of Roman beds!) and coarse bread and mcdonaldization thesis summary cheese diet, and the relatively small and non-lavish remains of year 9, his house on the Palatine Hill in Rome back up the idea of masters degree no thesis, his having lived a modest life.

Incidental details like these can actually prove to be more significant than you initially realise, and you can use them to build your argument; in skills year, the case of Augustus, for example, his modest lifestyle is particularly important when seen in the context of Rome’s troubled history with kings. As he gradually acquired more power and became Rome’s first emperor, he had to avoid coming across as being too ‘regal’, and the little details we know about his way of mcdonaldization, life are significant in light of this. So, not only have you brought your essay to life, but you’ve raised an writing interesting point, too. Few writers get it right first time. Once you’ve written a first draft, read through it and think about whether the order of your points is optimal and renee webber whether what you’ve written actually makes sense.

It’s easy in the age of essay skills, computers to chop and change – you can simply copy and how essay paste part of your essay into another part where it might fit better, and then make minor changes to your wording so that it flows. Essay Writing. After you’ve finished editing, have a final read through and check that you’re happy with the wording. Don’t forget to proofread to ensure that your spelling and mcdonaldization summary grammar is impeccable! Keeping a notebook to hand helps you gather good ideas when they come to you. Creative writers swear by having a notebook with them at essay skills year, all times, ready to jot down any ideas that suddenly spring to a college admission mind. You can adopt the same principle for your essay-writing, because you never know when the essay writing 9 inspiration might strike. Have a think about your essay topic when you’re out and about; you’d be surprised what occurs to you when you’re away from your normal place of study. As you can see, there are more similarities between two apparently unrelated kinds of writing than you might have realised. It is, of course, possible to go too far with the creative writing idea when you’re essay-writing: literary devices aren’t always appropriate, and your essay still needs to retain objectivity and conform to the more formal conventions of academic writing. But there are certainly techniques to be borrowed from creative writing that will help your essays stand out explain how essay from the crowd and give your teacher or lecturer a welcome break from the monotony of writing 9, essay-marking.
